Norristown campers at Camp Xtreme have been enjoying a summer of fun, engaging STEAM activities. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics. To combine challenging science concepts with creative projects, Camp Xtreme has partnered with Greener Partners, GlaxoSmithKline, and community leaders to design an incredible program that showcases the capabilities of Norristown youth.

Each week, the camp schedule features a Science Explosion lesson sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, a computer science and robotics lesson made possible through a grant through Montco Works, and an urban gardening session in partnership Greener Partners.

During Science Explosion lessons, campers conducted experiments using paper chromatography and water filtration while learning about fundamental scientific principles such as physical and chemical changes. Depicted is a CO2 and balloon experiment.

A senior from Norristown Area High School teaches older campers about robotics and computer science each week. Topics the students love to explore include Minecraft and YouTube.

In the urban garden, the campers grow peas, kale, collard greens, tomatoes, lettuce, watermelon, and many other healthy foods. Many delicious treats come from these fresh ingredients, including the smoothies they made using a bicycle!

Campers not only learn technical skills but also explore their creative side with chess and the arts. There are also study breaks at the pool and GetAir King of Prussia. Exciting field trips include The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education(SCEE), where the campers learned about nature and hiking, as well as The Funplex, a center with an arcade, amusement park, and more. Camp Xtreme also went on the Spirit of Philadelphia cruise, visited Harrisburg to meet with political leaders, experienced hands-on science at the Whitaker Center, learned about the conservation movement at John James Audubon Center, and will visit the Liberty Science Center in New Jersey on Friday. In addition to the trips, there are weekly on-site presentations from professionals in various STEAM fields.

The camp festivities will conclude with a talent show on August 10th at the Eisenhower Science and Technology Leadership Academy. Having made so many great accomplishments with the Camp Xtreme program, there is no question that the campers have much to showcase. Camp Xtreme shows that kids from Norristown are both intelligent and innovative. The future is bright.
