The votes have been counted and Elmwood Park Zoo finally has names for the two cubs who were born at the zoo. The name for the brother and sister duo have been picked as Diego and Luna.
We are thrilled to announce that our three-month-old jaguar cubs now have names! With help from a public voting contest, Diego was chosen for the male cub and Luna was chosen for the female cub. The general public voted for their favorite names for a $1 fee, with an option to donate additional funds. We are excited to announce that our contest raised $1,341 for the Northern Jaguar Project and their conservation efforts to preserve essential jaguar habitats through the establishment, care, and expansion of a safe-haven sanctuary in northern Mexico and the American Southwest. Both cubs are very active and alert. Luna weighs 13 lbs. while her brother Diego weighs 15.5 lbs. Inka and the cubs remain off exhibit and out of sight from the public. They will make their debut in the new “Trail of the Jaguar” facility when animal care staff determines they are ready.
Trail of the Jaguar opens to the general public on Friday, May 5, with a week of Member Previews beginning Thursday, April 27.
