Hello Norristown Project Volunteer,

Thank you for signing up to volunteer in our annual Earth Day cleanup in Norristown. We are excited you plan to dedicate time on April 23rd to make our environment a better place, starting at home. As we get closer to the event, we would like to share details with you regarding the event.

Our Earth Day project will begin at 1:00pm on Saturday, April 23rd and wrap around 5:00pm. We encourage volunteers to dedicate at least two hours with us, however, we understand if you can’t stay the entire time. The current forecast has Saturday listed as partly cloudy and high of 70 DEGREES! Friday will have a few thunderstorms which make Saturday a great day for pulling weeds and low pollen level. So at this point, it does not look like we will have to use our rain date and Saturday will go on as planned. On Saturday, we will use the hashtag #EarthDay2016 and tweet us or tag on Instagram @NtownProject.

Registration and sign in will begin at 12:30pm. We will have shirts, water and snacks available for our volunteers. The meeting location will be near the mural at the back of the park. As you travel down Haws and pass the bridge, make a left into the park and head all the way back until you see a container with a blue mural. You will see a silver van and tent with tables and chairs, that’s us. If you get lost or need help with directions, call 610-308-6195. We have three main goals we wish to accomplish and volunteers will split in groups:

  • River bank, boat ramp and seating area beautification
  • Park cleanup and illegal dump site cleaning
  • Schuylkill River Trail cleanup and Haws Ave entrance beautification

A detailed description of each project will be explained on Saturday when you receive your assignments. As your assignment is complete, I will let you know which area needs extra help so we can reach our goal for the day. Community service hours will be awarded to anyone who needs them for school or an organization they are involved in. Please flag me down before the event starts so I can keep track of how many letters I need to sign.

This year’s Earth Day project has many exciting partners to help make this day a success. We would first like to recognize Verizon Wireless, who unfortunately had to cancel due to a strike. We look forward to rescheduling a project with them in the future. We have shirts for the volunteers from ShirtCitizens who awarded us with a grant of 35 shirts. This year we also teamed up with Sly Fox Beer of Pottstown for their 2016 SRT Spreekend. They have a huge list of events taking place from April 22-24 as they announce their seasonal release of SRT Ale which benefits the Schuylkill River Trail. They will also provide our volunteers with shirts AND a coupon to try their seasonal brew at various locations across the region (must be 21). They also have a concert on Saturday from 3-10pm in Mont Clare, we recommend you check them out after our event. PennDOT and Keep PA Beautiful will provide us with gloves and trash bags for Saturday. We will also be joined by several officials and local businesses who will be recognized on Saturday.

Although we have much of the supplies needed for Saturday’s project to be a success, we still welcome any donations from individuals and groups. Our major need right now are flowers and mulch. If you can bring a plant or two, we would be in great shape and the park will look beautiful! If you plan to bring flowers, email me at sashe@montcooic.org to give me a heads up.

We hope you are as excited for Saturday as we are! We will have a resident photographer and possibly some visits from local news crew. At the beginning of the event, we will have everyone sign a volunteer form and photo release. If you don’t want your picture taken, let us know at the beginning of the project. Do not hesitate to reach out to me for any questions you may have. You can either call the office at 610-279-9700 or shoot me an email. Let’s get to work!
